GIS Mapping in Glendale Yearound

January 4, 2011

Glendale Yearound
Since coming on board at GVMA, GIS Specialist Shawn Kauffman has been working on mapping the Water and Sewer systems in the Glendale Yearound.

Shawn has been locating manholes, fire hydrants, cleanouts, and valves using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology. This mapping will help us to quickly locate problems when they develop and plan for future renovations and rebuilding of the Yearound system. These projects will improve water quality and reduce groundwater infiltration and inflow to the sewerage system.

The power of a geographic information system (GIS) allows maps to be digitized and shared more easily at a much-lower cost. GIS helps keep track of features above and beneath the ground, spot geographic trends and patterns, and help decision makers make key decisions.

In the near future, GVMA’s GIS will allow anyone with a computer and Internet access to view GIS data and maps online without having to incur the costs of GIS hardware and software.
